Weather in Australia
Australian seasons are the direct opposite of those in Europe and North America: summer starts in December, autumn in March, winter in June and spring in September. The seasons are very moderate with little variation in temperature; however, in the vast Australian outback, the temperature can range from scorching daytime heat to below freezing at night.
The north tends to receive more rain and has higher humidity in the summer months, compared to the south which tends to be dryer. The northern City of Darwin lies in a monsoon belt therefore flooding can occur during the wet summer season.
Tourists flock to the southern states during the summer months; however, it is better to visit in spring or autumn when the weather in the south is mild. Spring in the outback can also produce a spectacular array of wild flowers. The summer months get uncomfortably hot in most places -- and are especially dangerous months for melanoma!
Up north, being wetter, can become uncomfortably humid at this time but lush, green landscapes abound. From June until August, it is cooler and dryer in the north. This is a good time to visit Queensland or the outback. If ski slopes are what you're after, now's the time to head for NSW and Victoria.
