The continent of Australia is enormous, and there’s only one way to see it properly – by campervan! The cities are cosmopolitan and walkable, the rest is untamed and takes miles and months to see.
Sydney is one of the world’s most beautiful cities, with its harbour, bridge, opera house, botanical garden, and bustling circular quay and rocks precinct. The CBD is modern but has some historical gems, Chinatown is interesting, and Darling harbor is the new entertainment hub. Manly, Bondi, and Coogee are good beaches; Taronga, the aquarium, and Olympic village are other drawcards.
Brisbane is a modern, pleasant city situated upstream on the meandering Brisbane river.
Perth is a vibrant, relatively new and more laid back. The best beaches are found at Crawley, Peppermint Grove, and Como, while Freemantle is a delightful seaside town.
Adelaide is a pleasant, unhurried city, full of colonial architecture and green parklands. An ancient tram runs out to the quaint seaside suburb of Glenelg.
Melbourne reflects the wealth of its goldrush heyday in a modern cultural way, boasting belle époque buildings, old trams, tree-lined boulevards, a beautiful botanical garden, Chinatown, several good museums, the imposing MCG, South Bank Arts precinct, Rialto tower, and delightful St. Kilda seaside suburb.
Hobart is Australia’s second oldest city, sited among lovely mountains, with a lively waterfront and small enough for a walking tour of its simple street plan.
