Not only was silver a big mining find, but many people flocked to Austin in order to search for gold, turquoise, and uranium. The silver mining ended in 1887, with a short revival in 1910. The uranium deposits in the area were found to now be of good quality. Turquoise is still mined in the area today, although in very small quantities. This is one of the best places in the southwest to get turquoise. Many local shops sell jewellery manufactured from the gem.
Austin is now considered a living ghost town. It is an example of a Nevada mining town that has been very well preserved. There are three churches in town and the International Hotel. There are no rooms available there, but you can still but meals and drinks at the bar. The International Hotel in Austin is considered to be the oldest hotel in Nevada. There are also many other historical buildings throughout the town to see.
