The Boardwalk is where every visitor heads upon arrival to the city. The lifeblood of the city, it has casinos lined up along its length, dazzling in neon. Families will love the Steel Pier, a historic amusement pier built in 1898 adjoining the Boardwalk and featuring rides, games and stalls. Nearby, Ripley’s Believe It Or Not offers an ever-changing variety of weird, freaky, grotesque and seemingly unimaginable exhibits to enthral visitors of all ages.
The city is indeed a city of firsts, with respect to tourist attractions. It had America’s first boardwalk (1870), the first Big Wheel (1892) and the first colour postcards (1893), and hosted the first Miss America Beauty Pageant in 1921.
The Miss America Beauty Pageant is still held here every September and is one of city’s most popular events. The pageant takes place in a stunningly built hall completed in 1929, featuring an intricate interior with the world’s biggest pipe organ, containing 33,112 pipes.
