Exploring Atlanta
Around Atlanta you will find some quiet little towns, pleasant parks, and beautiful cities.
For Civil War history buffs, lovers of the grand and the just plain curious, Georgias Stone Mountain Park is an interesting place to visit. Here you will find the 90-foot likeness of such Confederate (Rebel) leaders as General Robert E. Lee and President Jefferson Davis carved into the side of a granite cliff. The park is also a pleasant place for a picnic, it features a restored plantation open for tours, several lakes, and a sky lift to the top of the peak.
A trip through Chattahoochee National Forest on U.S. Route 76 from Ellijay and past Blairsville to Clayton is one of the most scenic routes in Georgia, dating back to the 1920s and 1930s, when the federal government purchased much of the land here. That act alone helped preserve the fading culture of the southern Appalachians, which you can see today as you slowly make your way through this national forest.
Savannah Georgia, one of the Souths most comely cities, offers an extraordinary collection of 19th-century buildings. Having been spared by General Sherman during the Civil War when he burned to the ground so many other southern cities, its downtown Historic District is home to over 1,000 restored Federal and Regency buildings.
For a taste of southern country life, the pretty little town of Marietta is a great place to experience some southern hospitality. Only a half-hour from Atlanta, this town has nice little parks, quiet streets, and hometown cafes where locals meet to discuss life and the world. The town is also home to the Kennesaw Civil War Museum.
