Eleftherios Venizelos international airport at Spata (21km east of Athens) is a brand new, state-of-the-art airport. Charter flights and volume make this a cheap destination from the many European cities it services. Flights to North America, Asia and certain Pacific destinations are also regular.
Ferries, hydrofoils and catamarans bound for a bewildering array of islands depart from nearby Piraeus (15 mins from the centre by underground), with several a day in summer to popular places, such as the Cyclades.
There are two main intercity bus stations: Terminal A, about 7km northwest of Omonia at Kifissou 100, with departures to the Peloponnese, the Ionian Islands and western Greece; Terminal B, nearby has departures to central and northern Greece. Transport from the stations to points within the city isnt too convenient.
Trains leave for northern Greece, Evia and Europe from Larisis train station in Deligianni, There are also express services to Thessaloniki, Larisa, Xanthi and Volos and an overnight services to Thessaloniki. Trains for Peloponnese leave from the Peloponnese train station, which is on Sidirodromon.
Brazen drivers or motorcyclists can enter or leave the city via National Road 1, the main route north from Athens.
