Car Hire Atami (shizuoka) - Mini guide to Atami (shizuoka)
Atami, literally meaning “hot ocean,” is located in the Chubu region of Shizuoka in Japan on the Island of Honshu. Shizuoka has a population of over 3,700,000 people and the city of Atami has 41,000 people. This city is famous for its hot springs which are a result of the volcanic activity in the region. The baths from these hot springs may be found indoors or outdoors; they may be private or they may be public; and many of them are used by inns and hotels to draw tourists who flock to the Onsen (Japanese Hot Springs) to get away from the city and relax.
Atami is a resort area and is part of the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. This park encompasses Mount Fuji, Fuji Five Lakes, Hakone, the Izu Peninsula and its islands. Scuba diving is an activity that draws many visitors to this area each year as well as the Shiroito Waterfall, Lake Ashi, and the Atagawa Tropical and Alligator Garden.
A must see in Atami is the MOA Museum of Art. The Mokichi Okada Association created this museum in 1982 to house the extensive and unique collections of Mokichi Okada. He was the founder of the Church of World Messianity. He died in 1955 and the association formed to be able to care for the paintings, sculptures, lacquer work from China and Japan, as well as many other types of artwork which he had collected.
While one may get to the city easily by way of Japan’s railway system, to get out into the surrounding National Park, you may want to hire your own car for sight-seeing. Get out and about and view this lovely, diverse area of Japan.
