Car Hire in Aspen - Getting to Aspen
With its location high up in the Rocky Mountains, Aspen is a little out of the way. However, its popularity has ensured that it is served by several forms of convenient transportation.
Aspens small airport, Sardy Field, 6.4kms north of the township, is mainly used by private jets or charter planes. Therefore, most visitors arrive at Denver International Airport, which has extensive domestic and international services. The Colorado Mountain Express is on hand to shuttle you to the slopes of Aspen, and there is also a free shuttle bus. An alternative to Denver International is Eagle County Airport, 106kms north.
Driving to Aspen by car is an exhilarating experience, with fantastic, ever-changing views of the Rockies as you climb up to the resort. Take I-70, exit at junction 195 (Copper Mountain) and follow Colorado 91 south to Leadville where it joins US 24. Turn west on to Colorado 82 and pass through Twin Lakes and over the impressive Independence Pass. During winter, the highway over Independence Pass to Leadville is closed, so you can take I-70 to Glenwood Springs, and then drive the final 67kms east on Colorado 82.
Amtraks ChicagoSan Francisco line runs through Colorado and services are timed in both directions to pass through the magnificent Glenwood Canyon during daylight hours. Disembark at Glenwood Springs for Aspen, 67kms southeast.
Greyhound coaches run services that connect Aspen to Denver and to major cities and towns throughout Colorado and beyond.
