Exploring Aspen
Perched in the middle of the Colorado Rockies, the countryside surrounding Aspen is some of the most scenic in the United States, making it perfect for exploring by car in the snow-free months.
The major attraction for visitors in the Denver area is Rocky Mountain National Park to the northwest, and Aspen forms part of the scenic route that loops through the park. Though on the map the distances involved may not look that great, there are segments of the loop that can be very slow and laborious, so it would be wise to allow plenty of time for the sections you wish to explore.
There are numerous small towns in the area, each with its own atmosphere and history. Boulder is a lively foothill town, while Grand Lake features some magnificent panoramic scenery. Closer to Aspen is the evocative mining town of Leadville.
One of the most diverse attractions near Aspen is the Roaring Fork River, also known as the ‘Thunder River’. The river’s 112-kilometre length affords opportunities for white-water rafting, fishing and swimming. The river also cuts through some magnificent gorges, offering stunning scenery.
More strenuous outdoor recreation is provided by the hiking trails and climbing routes of the Hunter-Fryingpan Wilderness Area and the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness Area. Towards the Utah border, the landscape dips and rises in a patchwork of granite peaks, raging rivers and red-sandstone canyons, winding up at Grand Junction and the memorable scenery of Colorado National Monument and Dinosaur National Monument.
Other winter options include nearby Vail and the more distant Winter Park; while the hot mineral springs of Glenwood Valley provide a relaxing alternative to the hectic pace of the ski resorts. Sit back and soak up the warmth as you take in the incredible beauty of the surrounding mountains.
