Car Hire Aspen Airport - Mini guide to Aspen Airport
The Aspen Airport (or Aspen-Ptikin County Airport and Sardy Field) is located three miles northwest of Aspen’s city center. It is a public airport and has a single runway. It covers 573 acres of land.
Aspen is a historic city. It is the county seat of Pitkin County, Colorado. It is the most populous city in the county and the population is around 6,000 people as of 2005. Originally, Aspen was founded as a mining camp during the Colorado Silver Boom. It was named after the abundance of aspen trees that grow all around the area. Now, the city is known as a cultural center and a major ski resort destination.
The city of Aspen was not known for its skiing until after World War II. A Chicago industrialist, Walter Paepcke, founded the Aspen Skiing Company and the rest is history. From then on, Aspen became the destination for skiing in Colorado. Paepcke’s original idea was to create a utopian community and with his ideas the Aspen Institute and the Aspen Music Festival and School were founded. This is what makes Aspen a cultural center for arts, recreation, business, and intellectual discourse.
Aspen has also had its share of misfits who have called the place home such as Hunter S. Thompson and John Denver, who wrote many songs about the city of Aspen including “Aspenglow” and “Starwood in Aspen.”
The city has also hosted the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival. Whether you are there to ski, laugh, or check out the amazing cultural events, you will love visiting Aspen, Colorado.
