There are two magnificent arcaded squares located in the centre of town - Grand Place and Place des Horos - which boast exquisite Flemish style architecture and glorious harmony. Hôtel de Ville on Place des Horos is also worth visiting, featuring an impressive photographic display which highlights the destruction of the town during the war.
The Town Hall, or Hôtel de Ville, is an ideal place if you want to learn more about the city’s history. Walk around to observe the beautifully decorated rooms in what was once used as a hospital during the war. Next to the Town Hall is the Benedictine Abbaye St Vaast cathedral, built with grey stones. The cathedral houses the Musee des Beaux-Arts, with a great collection of paintings and sculptures. Highlights of the museum are a pair of miraculously sculpted 13th century angels, the Anges de Saudemont and stunning paintings by Philippe de Champaigne and his contemporaries - not to be missed if you are a big fan of art history.
