Car Hire Arnsberg - Mini guide to Arnsberg
ArnsbergLocated in the district of Hochstauerland, in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), is the town and administrative seat of Arnsberg. Arnsberg consists of 15 districts, and was formed in 1975 with the merging of 14 cities and municipalities into one large city.
It is located in the Ruhr Valley, and the city is defined mostly by the rivers in the valley. Indeed, the city travels along a loop of the Ruhr, from east to west. Arnsberg is first mentioned in 789, and was built in the 11th century by the Counts of Werl.
The Counts built a castle on the mountain (which was destroyed in the Seven Years War in 1769) but whose remains can still be visited by the tourist, or someone attending a public function. The last of the counts sold his countship to the Archbishop of Cologne in 1368. Towards the end of the same century a second castle was built on the opposite mountain, by Count Konrad.
But the original castle is still the highlight of the city, for it was under its protection that the town developed. Two towers are still around today, the bell tower and the southern gate tower. Indeed, the town grew quickly, and in 1238 a new town wall was built to enclose both the town and the monastery.
Witch trials began in the city in 1621, and later in 1643, the school was built (also during the counter-reformation when the local Benedictine monastery, Wedinghausen, became an important spiritual retreat). The ruins of the monastery are a tourist attraction too, and people come to the city as it is a spa and summer resort. Parts of the monastery still exist as a Catholic gymnasium.
Weaving, spinning and brewing are also major businesses in the city, as are the manufacture of white lead, paper, woodworking, electrical engineering and printing.
