Archerfield airport is located just outside of Brisbane (just 12 kilometres in your car hire), the capital of the Australian state of Queensland. The land the airport is located on began its life as a small farm, purchased by the then owner of the Brisbane Hotel in Russel Street, Thomas Grenier, in 1855. At the time, the land was some of the best grazing land in the area. Grenier passed away in 1877 and he is buried in the cemetery at the entrance to the airport, now known as Grenier.s Cemetery or God.s Little Acre, but back then it was called Oxley Cemetery. The name Oxley came from the river that ran along most of the property.s boundary.

In 1927 the chief flying instructor for Qantas landed his plane on the property, with a view to making it an airfield. In the 1930s, after the airport opened, Qantas moved their business there. During WWII the airport became an important part, housing several air forces, and this is commemorated by plaques in the old administration building.

The airport nowadays has four runways, and is home to the Department of Emergency Services helicopters and the Royal Queensland Aero Club, where they have been in the same hanger since 1919. It is leased by the Archerfield Airport Corporation from the Federal Airports Corporation, and is used mainly for civil aviation (although the 219 Squadron of the Australian Airforce Cadets are situated here.
