Located in the Lazio region in the province of Latina, is the town of Aprilia. The name may well be known mostly thanks to the motor bike company, but the Italian town is nestled between Roman castles and hillsides, close to the beach and 23 miles from Rome – far enough away to avoid the city smells and sounds, but close enough for a day trip. Its patron saint is the Archangel Michael, and the town is also rich in a cultural and folkloric sense.

The beach near to Aprilia is the beach where the fabled Enea landed. Enea was the youngest son of the King of Troy, and was the only son to survive after the infiltration of Troy, succeeding his father. Enea is sung about by Virgil in the Aeneid, and was also the name of Pope Pius II. Virgil was a classical Roman poet, and the Aeneid became Rome’s National Epic, being 12 books long. Enea was already famous in Roman fable, having being mentioned in the Iliad, so Virgil took the character and expanded upon it, tying loose ends together and creating an epic tale telling the story of Rome’s links to Troy, legitimising the first five Caesars of Rome as being Gods and founders, and heroes, of Rome and Troy.

A National Epic basically sets the scene for a town, city or country, telling how it began and how its virtues and laws came to be, among other things. Aeneid is thought to tell the history from the fall of Troy to the early beginnings of the Roman Empire.
