Exploring Annapolis
There are plenty of places north and south of the city to escape the crowds. For a better feel for the Chesapeake Bay region, head south to charming St Mary's City. This was the first capital of Maryland and was completely reconstructed in the 1960s, making it perfect for exploring on foot to admire the historic buildings. Alternatively, step back in time at Solomons Island, one of many small Chesapeake Bay towns that seem not to have changed for decades.
Families can head for two great nearby attractions. Wild World, 30kms to the southwest, features countless rides, shows and water attractions, including the scary Tower of Doom. There are attractions specifically designed for each age group, making the theme park a great stop for visitors of all ages. Twenty-nine kilometres northwest of the city is the Star Toys Museum, boasting thousands of exhibits relating to the Star Wars series of movies, including hundreds of TIE Fighters, Princess Leias, Chewbaccas, Jawas and Lobots.
Some outstanding outdoor recreational opportunities are provided by Sandy Point State Park, just eight kilometres northeast of the city. Activities include swimming and sunbathing, boating, picnicking and hiking. The scenery, centred around the parks two beautiful beaches, is magnificent. There are also some interesting historic sites in the area. Those interested in hiking, mountain biking, camping and horseback riding should try Greenbelt Park, 34kms to the west of the city.
