Andrews History
Andrews AFB began as a Union headquarters in a small country church during the Civil War. That same church, now called Chapel 2, provides worship services to the Andrews community.
Andrews AFB first opened as Camp Spring Army Airfield in 1943. In 1945 it was renamed Andrews Field to honour Lt. General Frank M. Andrews, who was so active in the establishment of the Air Force.
When the Air Force finally separated from the Army in 1947, the name again changed to Andrews Air Force Base.
Andrews Today
Andrews is operated by the 316th Wing. It is the official home of Air Force One which serves the president, vice president and senior government leaders. Andrews is also the US arrival point for visiting dignitaries from foreign nations. Kings, queens, presidents, prime ministers, and foreign military leaders all fly in and out of Andrews Air Force Base.
In 1963, following the assassination of President John Kennedy, thousands of mourners together with one of the largest assemblies of news media representatives, all lined up at Andrews to witness the return of the president's body, accompanied by his widow, Jacqueline Kennedy, and the newly elected president, Lyndon B. Johnson.
