Getting to Anchorage
Flying is the only realistic means of getting to Alaska. Its separated from the rest of the world by sea or miles of inaccessible wilderness. Anchorage International Airport has more than 30 passenger and cargo carriers and 4.7 million passengers pass through it every year. It is possible to fly into Anchorage from numerous cities in the US, and you can catch a flight to anywhere in Alaska including Valdez, Homer, Cordova, Kenai, Iliamna, and Kodiak from here. The airport is 10 kilometres west of the city centre, with regular shuttle buses and taxis available.
The Alaska Railroad, stretching 470 miles from Seward on the south-central Kenai Peninsula, to the northern city of Fairbanks, runs two primary passenger services during the summer season. On the rail north of Anchorage, the Denali Star operates daily between Fairbanks, Denali, Talkeetna, and Anchorage. To the south, the Coastal Classic operates daily between Anchorage and Seward.
A variety of bus and van companies operates out of Anchorage and provides services to almost everywhere in the state.
