Car Rental Anchorage - Exploring Anchorage
If youve come to Alaska, youll probably want to see a glacier, and there are a few within a short drive of Anchorage. Portage Glacier is at the head of Turnagain Arm. Here, at this accessible glacier, large icebergs fall off the toe, and bob around Portage Lake. There's a visitors viewing centre overlooking the lake and glacier, and a tour boat provides daily cruises. Other glaciers of note are Tustumena Glacier in the Kenai Mountains, a favourite hikers' destination. Matanuska Glacier is accessible from the Glenn Highway and Exit Glacier is found on the Kenai Peninsula at the edge of the Harding Icefield.
Forty-five minutes south of Anchorage, Girdwood is the home of Mount Alyeska, a ski resort. It's not cold enough in the summer to ski, but you can take a tram ride to the top of the resort for spectacular views. During the summer, in July, Girdwood hosts a fun weekend forest fair.
Prince William Sound made famous because of the catastrophic oil spill in 1989, is still recovering from the disaster. Nonetheless, it is still a beautiful place with excellent fishing and charming fishing villages Cordova being a good example. You can also view the Columbia Glacier from the ferry to Cordova.
