In the region of Lazio, located in the province of Frosinone is the town of Anagni. With evidence suggesting settlement about 700 000 years ago, and later inhabited by the Hernici people, Anagni has long been of spiritual and religious importance. This is evidenced by the fact that there has been found a linen codice outlining Etruscan writings, largely still untranslated due to the limited knowledge of the now extinct language.

The several words that have been interpreted indicate that the codice is a religious calendar, and was used to wrap a mummy (hence its well-preserved state). The codice was written in or about the 2nd century, and its importance only discovered in the late 19th century. In the 800s, the first Cathedral was built on the site of a temple that was dedicated to the Goddess Ceres, and is a site not to be missed. In the 1100s and 1200s, many Popes lived in Anagni, and in the 1200s four Popes from the one family came from Anagni.

Anagni was a seat of temples and churches for many centuries, and recent excavations have revealed it to be important with regards to culture and economics too. It is believed that the Hernici and Etruscans did business there, and later, many Roman Emperors spent summers in Anagni to get away from the Rome heat.

Located in the south-eastern hills of Rome, Anagni is a well-preserved town thank to the strong fortifications of the walls built by the Romans. It is a town of ontradictions, with historically well-preserved buildings sandwiched between more modern attractions.
