Alzey is located in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate, and is the seat of the district Alzey-Worms. It is the fourth largest town in Rheinhessen, after Mainz, Worms and Bingen. The main industry in Alzey is winemaking, and the state wine school is located here. As the state mental health clinic is found here, it is also known for its mental health care. Supermarket distribution is also big business here, with several distribution centres for major supermarket chains found in Alzey. The latter industry is ideal for Alzey due to the transport links (motorway and rail), which makes it easy to get to and from for the tourist.

Alzey is believed to have been inhabited as far back as the Stone Age, and on a Roman stone inscription from 223 is the original name – Altiaia – this name is still unexplained. Possibly, it refers to a Celtic settlement from 400 BC. By 350 AD, there was a village that had sprung up around a Roman military settlement, but this was destroyed and in 390 the Romans built another fort over the remains of the original settlement. Again this fell, to the Burgundian, some 10 years later. By 450, the fort was occupied by the Franks and the Allemanni.

Today, there are many things to see, including the market place, the old castle and the fish market. Pop in today and pick up some fresh foods, for a picnic with some local wines!
