Alta lies in Norway's northwestern fjord region, near the Arctic Circle. It is known for its views of the "Northern Lights" during winter and for the largest collection of prehistoric rock carvings in Northern Europe.

The diverse and magnificent scenery of coast, valleys, forests, deep fjords and plains is combined with an enormous variety of flora and fauna to make Alta a truly special destination. Every year, the Borealis Winter Festival is held over a week in March to mark the advent of winter and there is the possibility of sighting the spectacular Aurora Borealis or "Northern Lights" that flame across the sky in a multitude of colours. The festival draws both locals and visitors and incorporates a wide range of activities from Northern Europe's largest dog sled race to concerts and cultural events. Built in 1899, the Northern Lights Observatory at Mount Sukkertoppen is the world's oldest permanent Borealis observatory and a great place from which to view the phenomenon. The Northern Lights Igloo Hotel is constructed entirely from ice and is a unique overnight experience. Alta Museum, a UNESCO World Heritage site which includes the rock carvings for which Alta is renowned, is well worth a visit.

Norway's coast and rivers offer an abundant supply of high quality salmon and trout to delight anglers. Riverboat excursions are an excellent way to view Alta's awe-inspiring scenery. Those keen on cuisine and nightlife should visit Alfa-Omega, the town's Cuban-inspired hot spot with a relaxed bar and contemporary cafe. For shopping, Mandalen Husflidslag, about 13kms west of Alta, is a great place to pick up regional crafts.

The nearby Sautso-Alta Canyon is known as the Grand Canyon of Europe. It is now dammed but still a source of incredible scenic beauty.

Alta Airport lies 5kms north of the centre and is the most convenient way to reach the city. An extensive rail network connects Norway to other Scandinavian cities and the rest of Europe.
