Car Hire Alsfeld - Mini guide to Alsfeld

Alsfeld is a town in the German state of Hesse, almost in the center of Germany. It is found on the upper part of the Schwalm (river), in the Vogelsberg Mountains at the north. The town Alsfeld also contains 16 boroughs or subdivisions.

In the 400s, the Huns (traveling under Atilla) came through the area, and this can be seen today in the higher incidence of the birthmark known as Mongolian Spot seen in newborns.

The birthmark only lasts a few days after the baby is born, and is common amongst certain races (Mongolian being one). Alsfeld was first mentioned in 1069, and a Roman church was known to be in existence in the 800s and 1000s. The Counts of Thuringia built a castle along the trade routes, and this lead to the town being developed as early as 1222.

Alsfeld has been a part of the Hesse state since 1247, and legend has it that the name came about when the Margrave went riding and came to a hill near Alsfeld, he exclaimed that due to a strong wind "Als fällt mir der Hut vom Kopp."" (“I keep losing my hat.”) ‘Als fällt’ is pronounced ‘Als-feld’.

When the districts of Alsfeld and Lauterbach were merged with the district of Schotten in 1972, Alsfeld lost its seat to Lauterbach, and it caused such bitterness for so long that even the motor registry refused to issue licence plates with the code ‘LAT’ for Lauterbach, instead continuing to issue the code ‘ALS’ for Alsfeld. In 1978 the code ‘VB’ was decided upon, for Vogelsberg. Because of the merging of these districts, the villages of Berfa, Hattendorf, Liederbach and Lingelbach were merged with the town of Alsfeld.

Alsfeld boasts a well preserved historic town centre, complete with market square and walls, and old roads leading into the square through gates in the walls. The medieval town hall, constructed in 1512, should not be missed while staying in Alsfeld. Near the town hall is the Weinhaus, built in 1538, and the location for the old town stockade. Leaning against the Weinhaus is a building dating back to 1350 (with later modifications) and housing two cellars that go back to when the town first began.
