Car Hire Alice Springs Airport - Mini guide to Alice Springs Airport

Alice Springs is a town in the Australian state of the Northern Territory, about 1000 miles from the capital Darwin. Known as the .Capital of the Outback., or more simply as .The Alice. or the .Red Centre., Alice Springs is most famous perhaps for the striking Uluru, formerly known as Ayers Rock . lying about 335 kilometres from Alice Springs. It is listed as a world heritage site, and is a sacred place to the several Aboriginal tribes that are native to the area. It is home to springs, Aboriginal arts/cave paintings and watering holes.

Uluru/Ayers rock is particularly famous as it is known to .change colour., depending on the time of day or year. The rock can transform from orange to red and everything in between. It is the last remaining piece of a mountain range that once dominated the entire area. Get there by car hire and then pop over to discover the Olgas, a series of rocks about 25 kilometres from Uluru.

About a 14 kilometre drive in your car hire from Alice Springs is the airport, operating 24 hours a day and serving mainly domestic flights. Although a 747 or 777 could land on the larger of its two runways, a fully laden one could not then take off due to the short runway length and high temperatures.

The first plane landed at the Alice Springs airport in 1921, but later the traffic moved to a newer larger airport with the need for an air base during the war. The original airport was eventually abandoned in 1968, and it now houses the Central Australian Aviation Museum. The new airport, built in 1940, became the official airport in 1958, with the present larger runway being extended to that length in 1961.Alice Springs is almost equally distant from Adelaide and Darwin, and is practically the geographic centre of Australia. It is truly the .heart. of the country!
