Exploring Alghero
Driving around northern Sardinia is an exciting experience. The area features dazzling coastline, panoramic sea views and amazing landscapes. The scenic SS125 road in the east is particularly rewarding, but is also very winding and can be dangerous, so take your time.
The caves of Neptune, containing huge stalactites and intricate rock formations as well as a salt lake, are a 24-kilometre drive from Alghero. Just around the bay to the west of the town lies the village of Palmavera, on the road to Porto Conte. The settlement consists of a tower-like structure surrounded by more than 50 circular huts dating from 1000 to 1500 BC.
The city of Sassari, to the east, has a lively medieval quarter surrounding its 11th century Duomo, while a huge Renaissance fountain, Fonte di Rosello, is slightly farther away at the northern edge of the old town.
Sassari is an ideal base from which to explore the nearby Romanesque Santissima Trinità di Saccargia and San Michele di Salvenero churches, as well as the Nuraghi Valley, where there is a concentration of important Nuraghic ruins.
Spectacularly located beneath Monte Ortobene, Nuoro is a pretty little town, and thankfully not overly touristy. The Museo Della Vita e delle Tradizioni Poplari Sarki (Museum of the Life and Traditions of the Sardegnan People) features an interesting array of costumes, masks and more.
If you're in Nuoro in August, you'll be treated to the Sagra del Redentore, or Feast of the Redeemer, where you'll find traditional Sardinian garb, dances and performances. The neoclassical cathedral here is also worth checking out. At the top of nearby Monte Ortobene, there is a bronze statue of Christ as well as a large park.
