The Leine is a river in Thuringia and Lower Saxony in Germany. It is 271 kilometres long, with its source near to the town of Leinefelde in Thuringia. The largest city on its banks is Hanover – 40 kilometres north of Hanover the river joins the Aller (meaning the Leine is a left, or south, tributary). Although not fit for drinking, people do fish in the river as fish find it liveable, but the yield of fish is low.

Another town on the river Leine is Alfeld, also in Lower Saxony, in the district of Hildesheim. Alfeld was founded in 1214, and one of its most popular attractions is the old town hall, built in 1586, and housing an octagonal tower. The church of Saint Nicolai is also well worth a visit, as is the medieval watchtower known as the Fillerturm.

Perhaps better well known are the Seven Mountains, and although the famous story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs most likely originated in France, the Brothers Grimm’s version probably originated at the Seven Mountains. To the north is the Lippold’s Cave, where a robber-cum-knight is said to have resided. Alfeld is part of a programme to re-introduce native salmon to the Leine, which has had some success in increasing the numbers of the fish, and the gradual improvement of the water quality of the Leine is evidenced by the finding of a breed of fish once thought to be extinct in the Leine.

Alfeld is also part of a bike path along the Leine, so is fishing is not your thing, why not pack a pushbike and pedal along the Leine, taking in the sights as you go? Nothing is more relaxing that the sound of a running river, so make sure you stop for a picnic to rest your legs.
