Car Hire Aldershot - Mini guide to Aldershot

Home to the British Army, the town of Aldershot has many military-related places of interest to visit, yet is also a modern Hampshire town with all the shops, amenities and leisure facilities needed to support the surrounding community.

Of Aldershot’s many museums, Aldershot Military Museum has to be the town’s must-see attraction. Located in Queens Avenue, the museum not only tells the story of Aldershot Military Town with reconstructed Victorian barracks, but you can also ride a tank and be shouted at by a drill sergeant! Of additional historical interest is the centrally-located parish church of St. Michael The Archangel which dates back to the 12th C; and at the foot of Rushmoor Hill you will find Batt’s Hogg Style, the site of a pre-Roman encampment.

Most of the town centre is pedestrianised, letting you take in the Victorian architecture interspersed between more modern-day structures like the bustling Wellington Shopping Centre which contains the full range of modern high-street stores.

Being a military town, Aldershot has no end of restaurants, pubs and clubs to while away your leisure time. Curry, seemingly today’s traditional army dish is well-catered for in town, particularly Johnny Gurkhas in Victoria Road, which is a regular haunt for residents. Many also prefer to make a short trip into Guildford for a more refined dining experience.

Escaping from Aldershot and its military neighbours of Farnborough and Farnham, many pretty North Downs villages are a short ride away to the south-west. For the adventurous, the St. Swithun’s Way is a 34-mile scenic marked walk from Farnham, through the Itchen Valley, and ending at Winchester, home to the magnificent medieval Cathedral. For a more leisurely alternative, the same south-western journey from Farnham can be taken by car through the picturesque North Downs.

Aldershot is conveniently located near the M3 motorway, making both Heathrow and Gatwick airports less than an hour’s drive away. Alternatively efficient trains depart twice hourly from London Waterloo station (duration 45 minutes).
