Car Rental Albufeira - Exploring Albufeira
If you find the hustle and bustle of the Albufeira resort a bit too much, hiring a car will give you the opportunity to sample more of the quieter resorts and fishing villages along this beautiful coastline. Just to the west of Albufeira lie the more laid-back Sao Rafael and Praia da Gale beaches; while to the east is Olhos dAgua beach.
For a slice of history, head farther east to the city of Faro, which is the hub of the region. Take a stroll around the lovely port area, known as the Praade Dom Francisco Gomes, or visit the Roman walls still surrounding parts of the town. There are plenty of eateries to suit every craving, and the nightlife is lively and exciting.
The nearby Monchique mountain range to the north of Albufeira is a welcome relief from the more busy resorts down below. Sample the fresh air, filled with the aroma of eucalyptus, and wander the almond, orange and olive groves.
To the east lies the maritime city of Lagos with its picturesque port. The city was once home to Henry the Navigator's palace. For a spectacular panoramic view of the sea, climb the walls of the restored sea port. Also worthy of a visit is the Igreja de Santo António, a glowing gilded Baroque church with an eclectic museum. The beaches to the south of town are magnificent and very popular in the summer.
Europes western most point is only an hours drive west of Albufeira at the village of Cabo de Sao Vincente, with its dramatic cliff-edge setting. Visit the imposing 14th century fortress with its 43-metre diameter compass rose at the nearby town of Sagres, which is also set on a cliff edge.
