Located on the Tarn River, Albi is a small, scenic town in southern France, about 50 miles (80kms) from Toulouse. Not to be missed is the city’s cathedral, St Cecile, which is known as the largest brick construction in the world to have been built in the Southern Gothic style. One of the oldest and best preserved castles in France is the Palais de la Berbie, which was once the Palace of Bishop. The castle houses the Toulouse-Lautrec Museum, featuring wide selections of interesting artefacts. Visitors can also gasp at 31 famous posters kept in the museum.
Apart from its glittering array of historic monuments, Albi is also famous for its elite high school, Lycee Lapérouse, which is housed in an old monastery. Take a walk around the school and observe several literature classes and the school’s impressive music section. Those into sports can check out the city’s famous premier rugby league club, which made history in French Rugby XIII.
