Albenga is a picturesque city in Italy, in the Liguria region, nestled in the province of Savona. Situated in the Italian Riviera on the Gulf of Genoa, Albenga’s main income is from tourism as people holiday in the pretty town of Celtic origins.

Like many other cities in Italy, Albenga is dominated by historic churches, and these are well worth visiting. The old Cathedral goes back to the 11th Century, with the lower part of the front dating back to the 400s. Other sites to see include the old Roman Baths, and amphitheatre, dating back to the 2nd and 3rd centuries.

Running through the city is the ancient coastal Roman road, Via Julia Augusta, begun in the 1200s by Augustus. The road is a pretty way to view the city from above as you walk along it, looking down. Located on the old road is an Acropolis, an attraction that draws many people each year.

The baths and amphitheatre are also located on the road, and give evidence to the early Roman settlements in and around the area. Indeed, much of the history of Albenga is well preserved, with the city centre still displaying much of the properties as in Roman times, the courtyards and old city walls still in tact. The old Roman city of Albingaunum has been gradually buried over time, and so the early baptistery (a Christian building where baptisms took place) is now 10 feet under the city streets. Dating back to the 400s, the baptistery is close to the old town hall, a medieval structure also relatively unchanged since its construction.

Albenga retains much of its Roman charm, so for a glimpse into the past make sure you call in and spend a week or three exploring the ancient city.
