Exploring Albany
There are some great attractions in the countryside surrounding Albany, resulting in a smorgasbord of daytrip options. Just across the Hudson River via I-787, you can witness a still-functioning set of locks from the original Erie Canal, along with the impressive industrial legacy of Troy.
The Hudson River Valley, lined with thick forests and historical homesteads, is one of the most scenic drives in the area. This is where wealthy families such as the Roosevelts, Vanderbilts and van Cortlands built huge mansions which seem to rise majestically from the woods along the river banks. Just to the north of Albany is Saratoga Springs, a very popular natural spa and mineral springs resort that ranks alongside Europe’s best.
Outdoor enthusiasts can head to either the dramatic Adirondack Mountains, or the renowned Catskill Mountains, part of the Appalachians. Both feature great skiing in the winter, with challenging trails perfect for hiking and mountain biking in the summer.
Camping, canoeing and fishing are also popular in these rugged areas. The autumn is breathtakingly beautiful, with the mountains changing from green to brilliant hues of red, gold and orange. Scattered across the mountains are plenty of picturesque villages such as charming Woodstock, which is nestled among the Catskills.
Farther to the west are the spectacular Niagara Falls, while to the south lies New York City, featuring sights such as the Statue of Liberty and Empire State Building, and Long Island, with its great beaches, dramatic cliffs, picturesque farmland and holiday mansions of New York’s rich and famous.
