Ahrensburg dates back as far as the 1200s, when the counts of Schauenburg founded the original village of Woldenhorn, and the ruins of the castle Arnesvelde (from about 1200) are still visible to the south of the town. The King of Denmark came to own the area after the dissolution of the monasteries, and he gave Ahrensburg and the surrounding villages to his general, and it was the general’s brother and heir who built the castle as his residence, and later, the church and almshouses. Located in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, the most outstanding feature of Ahrensburg is the castle, dating back to 1595. Next to the castle is found the castle church, and the Almshouses.

In 1867 the village Woldenhorn became a Prussian country community and renamed itself Ahrensburg, and prior to this, the construction of the railway in 1865 made the town a popular getaway for Hamburg residents, and the population began to increase. Ahrensburg received city rights in 1949, and by then about half the residents were from the former German regions.

Ahrensburg is accessible by both car and train, being close to the A1 autobahn and the rail link between Hamburg and Lübeck. So, tourists have an easy way to get in and out of Ahrensburg, should they feel the need to hire a car and drive or simply take a train to see the sites.
