Mini guide to Agen
Agen
A town rich in culture and history, Agen lies halfway between Bordeaux and Toulouse on the picturesque river of Garonne. With an array of glittering historical venues, travellers might have to plan their trip well if they wish to see everything Agen has to offer.
One of the most popular attractions in Agen is St Caprais, the 12th century cathedral of Agen. It is one of the largest churches in France, with a double nave. Also worth visiting is the charming little 13th century church of Notre Dame, located in Place du Bourg at the end of Droits-de-l'Homme street.
Museum goers cannot miss a visit to the Musee Municipal des Beaux-Arts, with impressive collections of old paintings, furniture and a wide range of archeological finds. The museum itself is very lovely, housed in four beautiful adjacent mansions dating back to the 16th to 17th centuries.
Those into shopping should make a beeline to the south side of Republique boulevard where the main shopping area is situated while the public gardens of Le Gravier are ideal for relaxing amid nature and perfect serenity.
The city’s infrastructure is very good, with full facilities and a number of eateries for tourists. There is a market every Saturday morning not far from the public gardens. Buses run across the city while parking spaces are aplenty.
Having a car is a good idea as you can always explore other nearby areas at your own convenience. The best option is a car rental, which should be arranged before departing. We offer inexpensive car hire from Agen, which can be conveniently booked online.
