Mini guide to Acapulco
Known as the 'Pearl of the Pacific', Acapulco is one of the most glamorous destinations in Mexico, attracting a diverse crowd of celebrities, honeymooners and travellers looking for amazing beaches, jungles and a fantastic nightlife. The view from the bay is breathtaking, and in the evening, the sunset from Pie de la Cuesta is one of the best you'll see on this part of Mexico's coast. At night, when the lights come on, Acapulco becomes a partygoers playground.
Acapulco is set amid the stunning Sierra Madre del Sur. Some of the most beautiful beaches can be found along the Bahia de Acapulco, which forms an arc of miles of powdery sand. Near the harbour, you can find the pulse of the old city, Acapulco Nautico, which contains the main square and town cathedral. The city's most vibrant section is along La Costera, where you can find major hotels, restaurants and nightclubs.
Acapulco is home to some cultural institutions where visitors can learn about local art and music. The Centro de Convenciones contains a craft gallery and hosts exhibitions that vary throughout the year. The centre also has theatres, concert halls and a weekly Fiesta Mexicana with dancing, mariachi bands and Mexican food. There is also an enormous garden which is perfect for a leisurely stroll.
The history of Acapulco can be discovered at the Museo Historico de Acapulco. The museum's building was once the Fuerto de San Diego, which was originally built to protect the city from marauding pirates. After an earthquake destroyed it, the building was converted into a museum with exhibits about Acapulco from prehistoric times through to Mexico's independence in 1821. There are spectacular panoramic views from the top of the fort.
Near the convention centre, the Centro Internacional de Convivencia Infantil is a water sports park featuring dolphin, seal and diving shows. The main attraction here is the aquarium, Magico Mundo Marino, which offers a spectacular sea lion show, swimming pools and scuba diving. Visitors can also rent jet skis, inner tubes and kayaks for the day.
