Aalen is the largest town in the German state of Baden-Wurttemburg, in the district of Ostalbkreis, and is made up of several boroughs. Located towards the top of the River Kocher, Aalen is named for the River Aal, a small river near to the town. It is found in the south of Germany, but at the northern end of the Swabian Alps. It is only an hour’s drive from Stuttgart, the capital of Baden-Wurttemburg.

Aalen sprang up as a Roman fort, and some of the city walls can still be seen. It began its life in about 150 AD, and was home to about 1000 soldiers. At about 260 AD the Romans withdrew back to Germany, and the Alammani took over the area.

Aalen is located on the Autobahn A7 and is well connected to a network of arterial roads and highways. It is also well serviced by train and bus, so the average tourist should not have too much trouble getting in, out, and around Aalen. In fact, the double decker buses found in Aalen are some of the few still in use in Germany. The best bet yet is to take your bike and cycle around the old town streets, and 20 kilometres of paved bike paths. Not only will you see more than if you were on a bus, but you’ll build up an appetite to quench in one of the cafes.

There are many sites around Aalen that are well worth seeking out. The Fire Brigade Square, Rain Tree Avenue, Hospital Street, Wall Painting Façade and Citizens’ Hospital are all close to each other, and make a nice walk from one to the next. In another area are the Fountain, Marketplace and City Wall Passage again joined by a beautiful walk.
