A Danish town with a lot of character, Aabenraa is a great little place for tourists wanting to get away from it all.

Things to do and see in Aabenraa, include attractions such as the Old Town. It has old cobbled streets and is packed full of interesting architecture, from Castle Street to New Street with their Baroque-style buildings and red brick structures. The St. Nikolai Church still stands today, mostly unchanged from its 13th century origins. The Brundlund Castle, a former residence of the Amtmanns, is now an art museum with a mix of Danish and German works. The collections vary and seasonal opening times apply so please check ahead at the information and tourist office in the town centre to avoid disappointment.

The Aabenraa Marina, found near the centre of town, is a modern structure with the space for nearly three hundred light boats, but is also an ideal location to relax with cafes, seaside shops and pleasant bathing beaches close by.

The ‘Frog’ is a cultural highlight, demonstrating just how much the Danish value their children. It is a fun sculpture created by the famous local sculptor Hans Lembrecht and is found just outside the Engsig Kinderfarten. It depicts a steel frog ready to leap from a granite stone boulder. This delightful statue is much photographed.

On a more serious note, not too far away is the First World War memorial. It was created in 1923 and its splendid bronze relief commemorates the soldiers who died during the war.
