Malaysia is one of the most pleasant, hassle-free countries in the whole of South-East Asia. Thirty years of continuous economic growth and stability have made it one of the wealthiest countries in the region, moving towards a diverse and mixed culture with its complex fusion of Malay, Chinese, Indian, European and indigenous cultures and traditions.
Most visitors to Malaysia stick to the Northern Peninsula, home to the capital city of Kuala Lumpur, Penang, the refreshing contrast of the Cameron Highlands hill station and the tropical beaches and islands around Langkawi. Few make it to Sarawak or Sabah, on the island of Borneo – a wild frontier known for its stunning attractions, including longhouses and the worlds largest caves, (The Mulu caves), world class diving, Mt Kinabalu - the highest peak in S.E Asia, and much more.
In 130 years, Kuala Lumpur has grown from nothing to a modern, bustling city of approaching two million people. Situated on the convergence of the Kelang and Gombak rivers, KL (as it's almost universally known) retains much of its earlier character and local colour. It has lots of colonial buildings still standing in its centre.
The twin Petronas Towers skyscraper - the tallest building in the world - dominates the city skyline, while in nearby Merdeka Square stands a 95m flagpole. Southeast of Merdeka Square, the banking district merges into the bustling, old China Town, while further west is the 'green belt', housing the Lake Gardens, National Museum and the Malaysian Parliament.
Malaysia is hot and humid all year round and the November to January rainy season is pretty miserable - far from ideal travelling conditions.
