UK Government plans £100m Electric Car Test, but misses the point
Wednesday, October 29th, 2008
The UK Government has just announced that it plans to spend £100m on developing and rolling out an electric car program through major cities in the UK, to stay inline with their aim of reducing 80% of Carbon Emissions by 2050.

Pollution - don’t worry, the Government’s on it
But, to concentrate on the cities is very short-sited and does not eradicate the need for a fossil-fuel car one iota.
For example, tomorrow, I have to go to two meetings. One for 8am 40miles away, and one at 2:30pm a further 70miles away from that. Also, I’d like to get home, which is obviously another 110miles away. So I’m looking at 220mile round trip in one day. As all the cars on the current market have a range of under 60miles, and take many hours to charge, I just can’t do it.

I’ve not got anything against Electric cars - they’re just not suitable for my needs
So, I’ll look at the next option - the train: a six and a half hour journey there and back, no room for the meeting to overrun, 5 stops and a cost of £90. Not really what one needs.

The other option - the dreaded train journey
There is just no other option - I need something that will get there in a couple of hours and not have to stop every five minutes in different places. The Government, noble in trying to cut emissions should help develop a quick and cheap rail network or work towards making hybrid cars more effective.
Until I can get to meetings as quick and cheaply as with a car, the green aspect will be ignored, unfortunately.

A car just has the legs on anything else produced these days
Have your say
