UK car registrations down 20% for the new ’58′ plate

September 4, 2008 by Gareth Robinson

It’s that time of the year again when, as a lad I used to go to the roads, with a pen and paper and note down how many ‘new cars’ I could see. I still remember the excitement when I say my first H reg car. But that’s going back a bit!

Unfortunately the times are changing and the latest figures from The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) that new car registrations were down 18.6% to 63,225 compared within the same month in 2007.

There are less sparkling cars on the road...
Brand new cars – there are less 58 plates on the road

Is this a result of the economic down turn, environmental awareness or the price of fuel? Possibly a result of all the factors. It seems that there are bleak times ahead for the motoring industry.
