Top Tips on How to Rent Cars

April 14, 2009 by Gareth Crew

Renting a car is not exactly a difficult task but there are plenty of things that everyone should keep in mind to make the process painless.  There are several different things to be considered, such as where you will be driving the car, what kind of options you require, should you pay the extra money for the insurance, and so on.  With a little bit of research in advance, you will understand your options which will mean fewer problems during your travels. Travelling can be a challenge on its own without the hassle of rental car issues!

There are many different cars to choose from!

If you are travelling to a foreign country, it is always a good idea to rent a car from a company that has a presence at your destination as well.  This is especially true if you can use a company which you have used before as there are several advantages to doing so.  One of the most beneficial for the customer is that they will be able to take advantage of a loyalty programme that they might participate in.  Another advantage is that the customer is more likely to understand the policies of the company.

Pick the car for your needs

Every car rental company will likely have different policies and it is important that you understand them.  Even if you are familiar with the company you are renting from, make sure to clarify any questions that you might have in order to avoid problems down the road.  One of the most important things that every customer should enquire about is what comes included with your rental.  There are a number of extra fees that can be applied so make sure you are aware of these.

Some fees that are quite common involve the number of miles that you drive with the rental car.  Today it is pretty common for car rentals to include unlimited miles but always double check if you are planning to cover a lot of miles during your travels.  Nobody wants to return their car to find out that they travelled well beyond the allotted miles per day which could result in a number of additional fees.  If you plan on driving to another country with your rental car, make sure that you are allowed to do so given the terms of your rental contract.

One of the most confusing aspects of renting a car is the insurance. Should you pay the extra money for the insurance provided by the car rental company?  These are important questions to consider and there is not an easy answer for them.  This is because auto insurance policies vary quite a bit so while one person’s policy might cover their rental, another person’s policy might not.  The best thing that you can do is contact your auto insurance provider and find out the specifics of your policy straight from the source.  If you want to pay the additional money for the insurance provided by the car rental company, make sure to understand exactly what it covers.

Selecting the appropriate rental car to suit your needs should also be carefully considered as well.  When selecting your car pay attention to the transmission.  Are you comfortable driving a manual transmission because you can generally save some money on your rental if you choose this option.  Most car rental companies have automatic transmissions as an option but your rate is likely to be higher.  There will also be a number of different sized cars to choose from.  The smaller the car, the cheaper they are likely to be.  Gas mileage is also likely to be better for smaller rental cars as well.  Just make sure that there is plenty of storage capacity for your things and enough seating to accommodate those who will be travelling with you!

Yes, but can you drive manual, and will it carry your bags?

There are plenty of extras that you can rent in addition to the car itself.  One popular extra is the satellite navigation system.  Most car rental companies will charge a certain fee per day in order to use this device.  Having one onboard your rental can be very useful if you are travelling to an unfamiliar destination.  Instead of wasting your time lost, you can find your way to exactly where you want to be with ease.  Check with your car rental company and see if you can reserve the navigation system in advance.

The actual process of going to pick up your rental car can take a bit of time.  They will likely need to retrieve the car for you and there is typically paperwork that you will have to fill out.  Make sure you have everything you need to rent your car in hand to save yourself some time.  This includes your driver’s license and the credit card that you reserved the car with.  Check with the rental company you choose and see if you can’t fill out some of the paperwork in advance.  Some companies allow their customers to do this which greatly reduces the amount of time you spend there.

Make sure you have the right license and stuff with you

Once you have taken possession of your car it is time to hit the road.  If you are driving in a foreign country, make sure you fully understand the various road rules and drive carefully until you get used to the different vehicle.  It can be useful to drive around the block a few times as you acclimate to the controls, steering, and blind spots that might be present in the car.
