The world’s greatest sporting spectacle has been brightening up London, the UK and the world for almost a fortnight now and it’s undoubtedly taken us all by storm. The Olympics Games have been all anyone’s watched, read and talked about for the past two weeks and has given us all a real boost in what could be seen as a pretty depressing time recently. London 2012 has made us all forget about financial problems and rising unemployment and thank God it has!
Glory
The Games have gone swimmingly well. Logistically, it’s gone off without a hitch. We’ve seen the most spectacular opening ceremony of all time. We’re covering ourself in glory as a nation. But it doesn’t stop there. Team GB’s performance four years ago in Beijing was unexpectedly good. Our aim this time around was to try and match that great run and aim for the impressive 47 medals. Well, we’ve surpassed that and – if you ignore the insurmountable behemoths of China and the USA, we’ve won!
Pride
We’d like to take this opportunity to echo the sentiments of the nation and congratulate all the Team GB medallists and participants and say that, just like the rest of the country, we’re all very proud of you. Congratulations!
The Legacy
We’ve won more gold medals in different sports than any other country (bar China) too, which just goes to show how much strength in depth we have. It’s an exciting time to be British and our success at the Games will hopefully bear fruit with future success. We’ve all heard how much emphasis is being put on ‘The Olympic Legacy’. There have been calls from the Prime Minister David Cameron for schools to ‘change their sports culture’. More organisation, more competitiveness. Perhaps Team GB will perform even better in Rio de Janeiro in four years time…
The Price
In the last few years, a massive £312m has been ploughed into UK Sport, a body responsible for the promotion of sporting excellence in Britain. That money looks to have been well spent at the moment. UK Sport must be confident of further funding being thrown their way and why not? Why not head for the stars and try to better our fantastic run out this time around in Brazil…?
We’ve had our best haul of big shiny necklaces since 2008. What have you made of our fantastic tally of medals…? Does it make you proud to be British?
