You’ve probably heard a lot about Greece in the news recently. Their financial difficulties and political upheaval have seen them hitting plenty of headlines of late. But Greece is still a fantastic country to visit, no matter what. With its history, culture and welcoming atmosphere, it’s the ideal destination in many ways. So we’ve had enough of hearing about why Greece is failing as a country. We’d like to redress the balance a bit. Here’s five great reasons to visit the country that invented science, mathematics and for some reason, the unnecessary smashing of plates. Opa!
Their Economy (you cynic)
Budgets are tight for everyone at the moment. That Caribbean cruise is probably on hold for the foreseeable future, isn’t it? So you need to head somewhere affordable. You can take advantage of Greece’s economic instability at the moment and head there for a cheap getaway. Tourism is a huge part of the county’s industry, so they’ve slashed prices across the board. And if they exit the Euro soon, expect things to get even cheaper…
Their Economy (you charitable angel)
If you feel bad about heading to Greece to cynically exploit their miserable money situation, head there in a benevolent way. Consider your holiday as giving the Greeks a hand. They need the boost, so if we all headed there for our next vacation, we’d be giving them a real monetary boost!
Their Food & Drink
Fresh fish, gyros, Greek salad, feta cheese, olives, bread, olive oil, sadziki, saganaki, spanakopita, mousaka, kebabs, strapatsada, pitta and dips, dolmades, souvlaki, Greek yogurt and honey, gelato, halva, figs, nutella crepes, Mythos beer, the aniseed-y liquor Ouzo, Retsinas wine… If you can’t find something amazing on the menu, then there’s probably something wrong with your culinary senses. It’s a good job that most restaurants serve their food in a tapas style (called ‘meze’) which allows you try lots of different types. And what’s more – it’s all good for you! The Mediterrean diet is fabulously healthy one. Especially Greek cuisine.
Their Weather
Greece has an almost ideal all year round climate. Especially the islands. It’s warm enough to sun-bathe in every season and it’s never too hot or too cold. Great tanning weather!
Their Beaches
Greece has some of the most fantastic beaches in the world. With more than 6,000 islands making up the country (okay, so only 250-odd of them are inhabited), you get the kind of diversity that allows to pick from a huge variety of seafronts. They have every type of beach you can think of – pebble, black sand, red sand, white sand, crowded, empty and yes, even nude beaches. The waters around both Aegean and Ionian sea are often crystal clear and in the summer, beautifully warm. Unbeatable.
