Guide to Buying the Right Car
by Briony Jones
At one point or another, it is inevitable whether you are seventeen years old or ninety years old; you will at some time in your life ask yourself ‘How do I find the right car for me?’ There is no absolute right way of answering this question, as the answer is different for everybody. For example, a female driver with blue hair may not want a matching blue car, or might do because she is keen on the idea of clashing colours. In terms of personality, finances, general personal circumstances and preferences – the following guide will be one that covers the main points and tips to purchasing the most appropriate car for you. Firstly, it must be decided how many people will be occupying the car on a regular basis. For instance, if it were one person commuting daily to work, then maybe a vehicle such as a Smart Car would be appropriate Read more…

Top 5 worst cars invented.
by Paul Humphreys
As opposed to actually making and creating a car, inventing the initial idea of a car design is, perhaps, a lot less difficult. This list compiles the worst list of cars ever to be invented (by unimaginative people, or those who possibly have excessive imaginations that make it become impractical). Plato once said that “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” but the following five vehicles that have been chosen for this article reflect how the aesthetic beauty reflects in itself the lack of their quality construction. Let’s start off with the vintage Bond Bug. Mass produced during the beginning of the 1970s, this unfortunate orange coupe creation was marketed as a ‘Microcar’ as well as a ‘Sportscar’, however it seems to more appropriately fit the obscure category of ‘Only Fools and Horses if it Were Set on a Martian Planet’ due to the fact it also has only three wheels. The least Read more…

Wimbledon 2011
by Briony Jones
It’s this time of year again. Crowds upon crowds constantly devouring strawberries and cream in the rain once every year in the month of June and on until July. A visit from the Royal Family isn’t impossible, either. Few celebrities and empty seats here and there. Swarms of photographers stood in the front row, amongst the BBC making their television coverage with Sue Barker. The prominent and symbolic colour green and purple absolutely everywhere, the odd nudist and Tim Henman with John McEnroe commentating and generally making a racket. It could only be the Wimbledon championships, the oldest and most prestigious tournament in the world. Wimbledon’s first championships were played in 1877. The sport itself surprisingly started in the city of Birmingham, England. It was during the early 19th century that defined the sport by its original term, “lawn tennis”. It is debated that the French originally penned it as their own term and Read more…

Most Expensive Car To Insure
by Paul Humphreys
You know how it is; every month you pay your car insurance premium and it hurts. It’s physically painful. “Maybe I’ll win the lottery”, you wistfully ponder. Maybe you will win the lottery! No, seriously. If you did win the lottery, what would you drive? And how would your car insurance be affected? Would you be longing for those carefree days as a hard-up Ford Focus driver? Let’s take a look at some of the most expensive car insurance premiums. The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution is one of the most expensive car to insure. Due to the super speedy er… speeds the Evo reaches, its drivers are involved in more accidents than any other car. Therefore, very expensive to insure. The Dodge SRT-4 is an extremely expensive (and legal) street car. Prone to vandalism and joyriding, the flashy Dodge is a car thief’s delight. Similarly, the Subaru Impreza WRX suffers a similar fate. Come Read more…

Pimp Your Ride
by Briony Jones
Ah, boy racers. If it ain’t fast and it ain’t furious then they’re just not interested. They pimp their Peugeout 106 beyond recognition then spend their evenings racing each other around warehouse car parks. Phwoar! Sounds like a dream. But how to achieve this state of car glory? Well here are my top 5 tips to become a boy (or girl!) racer. 1) The sound system First and foremost you need to sort your sound system. A CD player must be fitted and super-powerful speakers installed, preferably in the boot. To be truly gangsta, you’ll need to go for subwoofer loudspeakers; it’s all about the bass. Then pop in the latest T-Pain, Snoop or Shaggy (no?) CD, crank it up to an unreasonably high volume and drive about annoying people. You could also get a muffler for the engine for that satisfying and unnecessarily loud vroom vroom when revving. 2) The wheels Read more…

Rise in ladies’ car insurance
by Briony Jones
For a long time, women have benefited from cheaper car insurance rates due to the general assumption that they are less likely to get in an accident. This is particularly true for young drivers; car insurance for a male who has just passed their test could be up to twice as high as for a girl at the same age and driving ability. Is this fair? The courts don’t think so. A new ruling has passed which considers cheaper insurance for women as sexually discriminating to men. The European Court of Justice in Luxembourg has passed this ruling, stating that it breaches equality. Fair enough, I’m sure there would have been a whole lot more fuss about this issue if it were women that were paying higher car insurance premiums. But on the other hand, the majority of car accidents do involve male drivers so should women be penalised for this, just for the Read more…

Cars of the future
by Paul Humphreys
Films and TV shows tend to depict the future with all sorts of gadgets – think Marty McFly’s hoverboard in Back to the Future Part II. Ask a kid to draw a picture of what they think the year 2050 will look like and they’ll come up with flying cars, teleportation pads and perhaps the odd robot. Pretty unlikely to actually happen but then again, a few years ago we’d have scoffed at the idea of a video call and no idea what an App is. So what does the future really hold for cars? I’m keeping my fingers crossed for the flying ones but in the meantime, here’s how the future is likely to pan out for cars. The future’s bright. The future’s… green. Everyone is eco crazy these days and rightly so, what with the melting ice caps and poor little polar bears and whatnot. Energy efficiency is the new frontier. Developing different Read more…

Moment of madness designs
by Briony Jones
When you’re on the road, have you ever driven past a car and wondered just what the flip the owner was thinking when they bought it? Bad paint jobs, blazing LED lights and unsightly spoilers are typical features of pimped-out cars. Here are a few examples of the extremes people go to in order to make their car stand out. These two have extremely intricate paintwork. You can’t help but appreciate the craftsmanship that has gone in to creating these patterns, but that doesn’t stop them being eyesores. If you saw one of these on the road you’d point it out but would you really want to be behind the wheel of one? And these cars are absolutely roadable, they aren’t display cars – someone is proudly driving about to this day in a tattoo-covered Lamborghini. In these environmentally-conscious times, everyone is going green but this is surely one step too far? A grass-covered Read more…
