Traveling itself can be kind of challenging. However, mix that with traveling with kids and you have yourself a battle that can be intimidating to say the least. The good news is, there are things you can do to avoid this! All you need to do is arm yourself with the right tools, and you can make this whole “event” go over a lot smoother. That is why today, we are going to talk about some of the different ways you can entertain your kids on a long haul flight!
Age Matters
Before we get into different kinds of entertainment for your kids, you need to remember that these ideas won’t work for everyone. What it may come down to is the age of your kids. Younger kids sometimes “need” to be entertained. Older kids, on the other hand, can usually come up with their own form of entertainment (hand held gaming consoles, iPods, and so on). So before you start planning a lot of things, remember the age range you are dealing with. Planning things for “older” kids can sometimes backfire.
Books
Believe it or not, books are still a great form of entertainment. Unfortunately, this tip tends to work better with younger kids. As we talked about above, older kids tend to enjoy their electronics a lot more. I mean come on, these kids are growing up in a different era! However, for babies and toddlers, sometimes pop-up books or any kind of book they can interact with will keep them entertained for a while. I would suggest bringing other backup forms of entertainment as well, but why not give books a shot too?
Hand Held Gaming Devices
If you have a kid that is slightly older in age, hand held gaming devices can be a great gift! This goes double for a long trip. A good video game can be worth hours of entertainment. However, do not expect those little free games on phones and other devices to last very long. I mean, have you ever tried to play those longer than a few minutes! Don’t get me wrong, they are a lot of fun, but they were designed to be enjoyed in short little bursts. Making them your primary focus during a long haul flight may not be the best idea.
Portable DVD Players
Movies! They have always been a great form of entertainment, and they still are! The great news is, technology has caught up with our “on the go” lifestyles. Now, with things like portable DVD players you can take movies with you wherever you go. Most laptops will even play movies nowadays as well. With most movies lasting around an hour-and-a-half to two hours, a few of these bad boys will get you pretty deep into your long haul flight. Word of advice…don’t forget the headphones! Just because it’s your child’s favorite movie, does not mean that everyone around you wants to hear it too.
Packing Some Food
Kids get hungry, it’s just a fact of life! There is no reason to think that, when you’re flying on a plane things are going to be any different. That is why I suggest packing a few little snacks to bring along. Their favorite foods are typically the best to bring along. However, other easy-to-pack food works great too – packs of crackers, fruit snacks, and other foods that are made to be “portable.” Keep in mind, it might be a good idea to check with your airport or carrier to see what their policy is on bringing food onto the plane.
These are just a few tips that you can use to keep your kids entertained during your next long haul flight.
