There was a mythbusters episode on the A/C vs Open windows. They had two similar vehicles. Both had the same amount of miles (they were new) and they put exactly the same amount of gas in each vehicle. They drove around a track at 35mph until they were out of gas, one with A/C full blast and one with the windows down. The car running A/C ran an extra 30 miles further than the one with the windows down.

I agree with everything in this article except the air filter. While what you say is true in response to what "they" say, but a dirty air filter will increase pumping losses in the engine. It's more restrictive to the air flow, making the engine work harder for the same amount of air through a clean filter. However, modern engines do measure the airflow and meter the fuel accordingly. So less air does mean less fuel, but a lower overall efficiency due to air restrictions. Good article. The best one on fuel economy yet.

Good tips. Pretty interesting to see how many sites post and repost those same things as being true, with out really thinking it through any.

These are some good tips. What about overdrive? My car's manual say that if I turn off overdrive in the city, I am likely to save a bit on gas. Is there any truth to that?
