Top Two Reasons to Travel: Food and Culture

As you already know, there are tons of reasons to travel. Some people like to relax, others just like to spend time with their family. Despite both of these being good reasons, they are not the two main reasons to travel. When you think about traveling, there should be two things that come to mind: Food and Culture! We can spend our whole life in one area and never really experience what else this great world has to offer. However, when you travel to a new location, you get to see a side of this great planet that you may have never seen before!

Food and Culture Go Hand in Hand

When talking about the culture of an area, you have to talk about the food as well. No matter where you visit, food can tell you a lot about an area. That is why it is very important to try new foods when you visit exciting new locations. By trying these foods, you are partaking in that area’s culture. You, by way of your taste buds, are experiencing a way of life that you have been missing out on.

That brings me to my next point! When visiting a new location, be sure to try the local food and avoid tourist hotspots. People feel safe eating what they have grown up eating their whole lives. However, part of the fun of visiting a new location is trying something new. The tourism industry makes billions of dollars a day. One way to get people to travel is to offer something that they are familiar with. Although this does get newbies to travel to locations they normally would not have visited, it kills the “experience” of traveling to a new location. Thus, avoid eating the same old foods that you eat back home. Try something new and experience the true culture of the area!

Finding the True Culture of an Area

Just because you traveled to a new country, does not mean you have witnessed their “true” culture. In fact, if you do not stray from the beaten path, chances are you will never find the true culture of an area. For example, most popular tourist destinations have what they call “tourist hotspots.” These are areas that are done up to make tourists feel more at home and safe in a new country. That is all well and good, but do you think that locals hang out in these locations? Do you think that this is where locals go on a daily basis? All signs point to no!

If you really want to take in some authentic culture, you have to visit the areas that locals visit. Find the areas that they visit, the cafes they eat at, and what they do for fun! Spend a day doing what locals in this area do. Yeah, it is going to be difficult, and some of the things you try may put you on edge. To put it simply, it may be a “culture shock.” However, in the end, it could prove to be worth it.

Grow by Learning from Others

So why should you care? What is the whole point of finding the true culture of a country? Well, to be honest, there are many reasons why you should “care.” To put it simply, you can learn a lot about our planet by learning how others live. Ever heard that expression: you don’t know anything about a person until you have walked a mile in their shoes? That saying could not be more fitting!

In many countries, people think that the way they do things is the “only” way to do it! However, when you visit other places and see that it can be done differently, it can be very moving. Of course, it can also be very shocking…that is not necessarily a bad thing. Visit these locations and “be” shocked. It is how we grow!

Do you think food and culture is important when visiting a new location?
