Drinking and Driving in Europe

Posted by

There is no better way to tour Europe than to just drive. Sure, you can fly from country to country, see some of the tourist hotspots, and then be on your merry little way. However, you are not experiencing the true atmosphere of a country this way. That being said, it does bring up a great question: What’s the best way to experience all Europe has to offer? Drinking and driving…no not both together…here let me explain.

Drinking and Driving Tour Through Europe

Call it what you will: beer tour, pub crawling, whatever. The truth remains the same either way. Touring the best pubs Europe has to offer is the best way to travel. Why? It’s really quite simple. Visiting these pubs gives you a feel for what the local atmosphere is really like. This is not where the typical tourist hangs out. This is where the locals hang out. Thus, if you are looking to truly experience Europe, you have to make a pub tour. In doing this, you may come across some of the craziest watering holes Europe has to offer, but you are also going to meet some of the most “real” people you have ever met.

Pub Crawling Done Right

Listen, visiting the greatest pubs that Europe has to offer is all well and good, but you have to keep your wits about you. In fact, there are some pub crawling tips you should know before you start your drinking and driving tour through Europe. So lets cover some of the basics:

Watch those pre-drinks

Yeah, I know. Having a few pre-drinks before you head out to the local pub is a great way to save money. It is also a great way to “loosen up” before hitting the town. However, you need to know your limits. Think you have what it takes to make it through your entire tour? Well, you won’t get to see much of Europe with your head in a trash bin! So remember your limits! There are other cities to see, and more pubs to visit.

Don’t forget to eat

Some people seem to think that eating during a pub tour is cheating. This is not the case. In fact, no one knows your body better than you. If grabbing a bit to eat before you hit the pub helps you to handle your alcohol better…or helps with the hangover the next day, just go ahead and eat.

Everyone sees everything

There used to be a time, when pub crawling, that your bad behavior stayed on the tour. Meaning, once you go back home, what you did on your European tour stayed on the tour. Now, with all of the social media, that is not the case. Everyone has cameras (a.ka. your mobile), and everyone has access to the internet. Before you know it, your ill-fated night could be the next YouTube smash hit. So watch what you say and do while touring Europe. After all, not everyone on Facebook needs to see just how much “fun” you had while touring Europe.

Best Driving Tours in Europe

Finding the best driving tours in Europe is all about taste. Of course, if you are looking for tours with the best pubs, now that is a different story! There are cities all over Europe that are known for their great pubs. Keep in mind that there are tons of places you can hit. Some longer, some shorter. To cover them all is…well…impossible. However, I am going to give you my favorite European driving tour.

Firstly…

First, on my driving tour through Europe, I would hit Spain. Now the order you hit these places in

Spain is completely up to you. First, I would head towards Ibiza. This is one of the largest islands located in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Spain. I choose to hit this area first because it is off the mainland. Some of the best sights and pubs can be found here. Before leaving Spain, you also need to hit up the Valencia region and visit Buonl.

Then…

From Spain, you need to head up to Germany (stopping at pubs along the way in France is completely optional). When you first get here, you have to stop at Wieslet. This is just a small town, but you will be so happy you chose to stop. From there I would head across Germany (hitting the stops you want to see), making my way to Hamburg. This will pretty much take you the length of Germany and allow you to see much of what the country has to offer. After hitting the great pubs there, you need to check out Cologne and Dusseldorf before making your way your out of Germany to Amsterdam. This is the perfect place to end this tour before heading back home.

Now, granted, this is a tour that is pretty spread out. That is a lot of ground to cover (and pubs to hit) so be sure to leave yourself plenty of time.

What countries would you like to tour while pub crawling?
