If there is one thing that you need to go on holiday, it’s money! People can never seem to bring enough of it when they go on holiday. Regardless of how much you save, it seems to vanish quicker than margaritas at a Jimmy Buffett concert. Recent reports have suggested that 1 out of every 4 Brits overspends when on holiday. That being said, it’s not just Brits that are guilty of this. People from all over the world have the same problem. So let us look at some of the main reasons why people overspend on holiday.
Buying Gifts
When you go on holiday, you always feel like you need to buy a gift for the people stuck back at home. Maybe it’s out of guilt, perhaps you just like giving gifts, or maybe they asked you to bring something back for them. Regardless of the reason, people spend way too much on gifts when on holiday. Remember, you don’t have to buy gifts for uncle Ted, aunt Marry, and all your friends from college (who you never speak to anyway)! Point being, this is your holiday. If they want something, maybe they should take a trip there and pick it up themselves!
Eating Out
I don’t know who came up with it, but for some reason people feel that they have to eat out every night when on holiday. Yeah, I know it’s a lot of fun, but it costs a lot of money too. Do you eat out every night when not on holiday? Of course not! Treat yourself to a nice meal out every once in a while on holiday. For all the other times, go out to the store and buy some things to keep at your hotel.
Having a Drink…or two…or ten
Another thing that tends to separate us from our money is drinks. According to reports, this goes double for Brits! Everyone likes to have a drink every now and then, but people tend to drink more on holiday. This is understandable. After all, being on holiday is about having a good time. However, having drinks every night at the pub is expensive. This goes double if you’re going to sit there and attempt to drink yourself into a coma. Pace yourself! You and your wallet will feel better!
Money Saving Tips
Alright, we have covered some of the top things that cause us to part with our money. Now, let us cover some things that can keep you and your money in good company. Below are a few money saving tips”
Plan out a Budget – Don’t go into your holiday planning on spending everything that you saved. Make sure you plan out a budget so you know when you are reaching your limit. If you feel obligated to get a gift for people, work that into your budget. Be sure to come up with a maximum spending level for all of the people on your gift list.
Watch out for Greed – A lot of times, when people are shopping for others, they like to buy something for themselves as well. When you go gift shopping for others, do not look for yourself as well. Succumbing to greed is one of the fastest ways to lose the company of your money!
Don’t Forget to Look for Deals – Chances are, you are going to do a bit of shopping for yourself when on holiday. Don’t forget to check for the best deals online before heading out. Most of the time, there is no way to tell if a deal is good or not when you are in the store. This goes double if you are buying something that you are not familiar with. Do your homework before heading out.
If you have a Smartphone, Use it – Trying to find the best deals online is great, but what happens when you come across something that you didn’t even know about! It is kind of hard to search for deals at the hotel if you don’t know something is out there. That is where your smartphone comes in. If you come across something and you’re not sure what it is, check for it online. Find out what other stores are selling it for before you pay money. Remember, many stores will try and play tourists for suckers. Don’t let them!
