What would Don Draper do? A question I often ask myself these days, having totally fallen in love with HBO’s hit series Mad Men. Set in late 50s’ Manhattan, everything from the clothes to the soundtrack is effortlessly cool. So how do I get to be this cool? A lot of hair gel, even more whisky and an eye for the ladies. Doable. But what would Don Draper drive?
Don starts the series in a Dodge Polara. Totalling this after one too many daytime glasses of Scotch, Don treats himself to a 1962 Cadillac Coupe de Ville, an expensive two door coupe in baby blue. He chooses the Caddy to show he’s well and truly made it, but what else could he have gone for? Here are a few suggestions for classic cars to suit TV’s coolest customer.
The coolest man in the world would surely want to get involved with the world’s first sports car? Two seats, fibre glass body, the Chevrolet Corvette certainly set tongues wagging in the 50s. At first anyway… Despite looking sexy, the Corvette’s performance left something to be desired. It was nearly dropped from production, until it was revitalised with three-speed manual transmission. I could picture Don whizzing about in one of these during his bachelor days. But as a family man, there’s simply no room for little Sally, Bobby and baby Jean in a two-seat sports car. Moving on…
Not quite released in the world of Mad Men yet but surely earmarked for Don in a year or two, I put forward the 1963 Buick Riviera. A luxury car by GM, and a favourite for many classic car enthusiasts, the Buick Riviera combines style and performance. Roomy enough for weekends with the kids and slick enough to impress the ladies, the Riviera just might be the car for Mr Draper.
My final suggestion (seeing as technically Don wouldn’t have been able to buy the Riviera yet) is the Lincoln Continental. Launched in 1961, the Lincoln Continental encapsulates American cool. With looks to match its performance, this car made a statement. If you were driving the Lincoln Continental then you were well and truly somebody. Given Don’s troubled past and rise to from a humble salesman to a highly paid advertising executive, this luxury car would well and truly have cemented his status as someone to watch.
So what would don Draper drive? Something cool that’s for sure.
